I will provide a brief overview here and highlight important points. If you’re already familiar with them, you can skip to the next section.
Digital marketers have access to a variety of tools through Semrush. The purpose of this guide is to introduce them to their content marketing Platform. The company also offers SEO tools like site audits, keyword research, and other essential SEO features.

In the future, I’ll create another guide about auditing your existing content and how to use other tools.
1. Topic Research Tool: Get Ideas Quickly
Digital marketing is a complex field. There are a lot of changing parts in it. Content is important regardless of the industry or channel you use-whether it’s social media, your website, search engines, or paid advertisements.
It is for this reason that content is at the center of your marketing strategy. If you don’t have content, how will you promote and communicate?
It is designed to help you generate new post ideas. You can generate headlines and new posts through the tool. All you have to do is enter a keyword or topic you’d like to discuss and wait for the system to do its work.
The tool will provide you with a list of subtopics and the most shared headlines around the topic. This will help you identify as many topics as possible to include in your own blog posts.
Then why? This year in 2021, creating content that is in-depth will help you rank on Google more effectively than just using a bunch of words to pass as an article.
Here’s how to get started:
- To get started with the Content Marketing Toolkit, you must be logged in to Semrush
- To research a topic, click here
- Type your keyword/topic here
You will receive an output in the form of cards when you use the Topic Research tool. The cards represent the subtopics and their results.
Three things stand out in this situation, but I’d like to highlight them:
1. Different views
The results can be viewed in four different ways: Cards, Explorer, Overview, and Mind Map. The default view is cards.
- The cards view displays results in a Post-it style. It’s like brainstorming on a whiteboard.
- Each subtopic is shown in a table displaying social traffic/engagement
- This overview summarizes the top/best results so you can make quick decisions
- Using a mind map, you can see how each subtopic relates to the main one
2. Sort/prioritize topics
There is a filter called Prioritize topics on the right side. The results are sorted by volume, difficulty, and topic efficiency.
- Search volume refers to the topic’s monthly search volume.
- Based on the competition, difficulty refers to how easy/hard it is to rank
- The topic efficiency metric combines traffic and difficulty to determine which topics will be the most profitable, thereby a metric that demonstrates ROI.
3. Card details
Topic Research is primarily used for this purpose. You’ll see something like the image above when you click on any particular subtopic. There are three main parts:
- There are three metrics at the top: volume, difficulty, and efficiency.
- Here, the top 10 Google articles ranked by their keyword for the subtopic are listed on the left column
- There will then be a breakdown of questions on the right hand side of the page
2. SEO Content Template: Create SEO-Friendly Content
It is a tool for content writers that are aimed at helping them create content that is likely to rank well in search engines.
Familiar with the Skyscraper Technique? Semrush will help you to achieve that easily.
Start by typing the main keyword/topic you want to rank for. It analyzes the top 10 articles ranked on Google and gives you recommendations on various aspects:
- Keywords related to your content that you should use
- Getting links from these sites is a good idea
- The suggested reading level
- Length/word count recommendations for articles
- Video usage is another recommendation
I have highlighted the top factors here:
- Displays Google’s top 10 rivals per keyword
- Your competitors’ key recommendations in the following categories:
- Keywords associated with semantics
- Obtaining backlinks from the following websites
- Score of readability
- Length of text
- You might want to add a video as well
- Keywords used in the content of competitors
- Here are some basic guidelines for optimizing your on-page SEO
- Page title
- Meta description
Using this tool, you can outrank your competitors on SERPs. It will be easier for you to plan blog posts and other types of content if you know more about your competition.
3. SEO Content Writing Assistant
Combined with the SEO Content Template is SEO Content Writing (SWA) by Semrush. Content can be analyzed in real-time for SEO and originality.
SWA will make sure that you meet the recommendations provided by the SEO Content Template, such as keyword usage, readability score, and text length.
There are three ways to use Semrush Writing Assistant:
1. Use Semrush Writting Assistant in Semrush
Directly within Semrush, you can access the Writing Assistant. However, I have not had a very positive experience. There are only a few features, but it’s useful if you need to make one quickly.
2. Use Semrush Writing Assistant In WordPress
This extension helps you write SEO-friendly content in WordPress. It will not slow down your site since it runs only on the backend. In case if you don’t know how to install a WordPress plugin, this article is for you.
By default, SWA appears at the bottom of your editor, so I click on the float mode so it can appear as a sidebar.
The floating sidebar will appear once that is done. Look closely at the one inside Semrush; it looks the same. The score is based on four factors: readability, SEO, tone of voice, and originality.
I prefer to use the SEO Writing Assistant in this way.
3. Use Semrush Writing Assistant in Google Docs
Last but not least, if you use Google Docs to install the add-on, sign in to your Semrush account, and the SWA will display recommendations.
This would be a great way to write for other clients and/or work with other writers.
You can easily scale your content if you’re a paid Semrush user by creating SEO Content Templates and exporting them to Google Docs. You simply need to install it as an add-on. Your writers will be able to access the SWA once they create a free account when you share the document with them.
How to Use Semrush Content Marketing Platform
Semrush Content Marketing Toolkit can be used in many different ways. Research in-depths, workflow, and many other factors affect how long it takes.
My article was written using the toolkit as an example.
Step 1: Conduct topic research on your chosen topic
The first step is to go to the Topic Research tool.
Just enter the topic and location you’d like to research. Topic Research will then provide you with more tailored recommendations.
You can also see your previous searches if you used the tool previously.
Step 2: Check out different cards
As you can see, I entered my main keyword for this topic in the Topic Research tool.
I can see various subtopics. I looked through these cards to get an idea of what I’m up against.
Step 3: Use the Different Views
It can help to look at things differently sometimes. Mind maps are one example of how they may help generate new ideas.
All these views were displayed to me as I browsed them. Take a look at the overview tab if you’re particularly lazy. Obviously, this would not be a good idea.
Step 4: Mark Your Favorite Ideas
Titles are rankings on Google for articles related to a particular topic, as mentioned above. To read these articles in a new tab, please click the blue arrow. You can toggle between the different questions on the other side.
Please add it to your favorites if you think it will be helpful for your article. Click on the icon to the right to mark it as favorite. Green will appear once the headline/question is added.
When researching, you should do this for every card, question, and other related topics. It’s best to be thorough here so you can create the best possible content to outrank your competitors.
Step 5: Look at Your Favorites List
When you have finished researching, you will find your favorites grouped by subtopic. Write about the ones that interest you. Click on the SEO Content Template button at the top to move on to the next step.
Step 6: Create an SEO Content Template
The creation page for the SEO Content Template will appear after clicking the button. The keywords will be automatically populated.
Adding or removing keywords is now possible.
You can also select the location and device targeting for recommendations. As a direct result, I target all of my campaigns to mobile device users.
Click on Create SEO Template once you’re satisfied.
Step 7: Connect Semrush Writing Assistant To WordPress
I use WordPress, as you already know.
My first step is to open up WordPress and create a new post.
By clicking the Use for this document button, I can add the Content Template. I just created the SWA by scrolling down to find it, Now click on float mode to bring it to the sidebar, and then click on the Use for this document button.
It’s important for conserving your SEO Ideas Units. I will talk more about these limitations in the future. It will show you where you have to work more that will help to rank your content higher in the SERPs.
This writing assistant will recommend how you can improve the Readability, SEO, tone of voice, and originality of the content.
Step 8: Create Your Content
Writing your copy is the hardest part.
To make your writing stand out from the crowd, I suggest that you use your favorite headers as your sections and in your title tags.
You should then answer the questions inside your content.
During the research, I answered a query about the difference between Semrush Content Marketing Toolkit and other SEO tools.
Step 9: Publish Your Content
Publishing your post now or scheduling it for later may depend on the frequency and timing of your posting.
For me, publishing first, fretting later is what works best. It’s always possible to edit it later.
Step 10: Distribute Your Content
You still have work to do after publishing.
To drive traffic to your business and be successful you must distribute your content.
Before anything else, I take the following steps post-publish. My organic traffic increased by 7% after completing this step. I don’t think it’s bad at all.
After creating and publishing your content, you should distribute it on all the channels you already use, such as social media and email.
Here are some other ways you can gain traction faster:
1. Send An Email
Send an email to the brand/website/author you mentioned or linked to in the article. You’re basically telling them you used their content. Here’s the link, feel free to promote it if you like it. Each one must be done individually.

2. Mention on Social Media
Whenever you mention a brand or website or link to one on social media, mention or tag it. This tactic is similar to the previous one, only on another channel.
Ask Google Search Console to index your URL manually by adding your URL inside. You will be able to increase your Google ranking by doing this.
3. Internal Linking
Add links from the content that is already on your site to the new content by performing a site search. Enter this string in Google without the quotation marks: “site:facileway.com “Semrush content marketing”. You will see existing posts that mention the topic.
Check them out and if it makes sense, add a link to your new post. This will make your new site get indexed faster, and it will also bring additional traffic since your older posts already have a steady stream of traffic.
You can also use a premium tool like LinkWhisper to make this process easier.
Content Marketing Toolkit: What Makes It Different From Other SEO Tools
I won’t compare features one by one here. Here are some key questions and differences between Semrush Content Marketing Toolkit and other content marketing tools.
1. How is the Semrush Content Marketing platform different from SEO tools like Ahrefs, Ubersuggest, and Moz?
Within the Semrush software, the Content Marketing Toolkit provides tools for creating content. Ahrefs, UberSuggest, Moz (and other tools) are used primarily for keyword research and analyzing keyword traffic and backlinks. The SEO Toolkit of Semrush includes these tools as well.
2. What’s the difference between Semrush Content Marketing tools with Yoast or Rank Math?
It uses artificial intelligence to assist you in finding and creating the most effective content. Content Marketing Toolkit by Semrush does not. Yoast, Rank Math, and other SEO plugins only help you optimize your page for a specific keyword(s). Your recommendations aren’t determined by Google’s competitors.
3. Does that mean I don’t have to use Yoast/Rank Math if I’m using the Semrush Content Marketing Toolkit?
Not at all. They do collaborate in fact. Title tags, meta descriptions, and other technical SEO recommendations can be handled by SEO plugins.
Content Marketing Toolkit for it (specifically the SEO Writing Assistant) helps you create content that is likely to beat your competitors in Google search results.
Take Semrush’s traffic analysis tool, for instance. Find out what keywords your competitors rank for by entering a domain here (yours or theirs).
