Why You Need An SSL Certificate On Your Website in 2024

Do you want to know why you need an SSL certificate on your website or blog?

In this context, I will share the reasons step by step why you need an SSL certificate.

You have heard the buzz about SSL and website security. In case you missed it, You should know, that Google Chrome started alerting site visitors that a website isn’t secure if it doesn’t have an HTTPS connection.

What is an SSL Certificate?

It’s a digital certificate that ensures the website’s identity and creates an encrypted connection between the web server and web browser.

SSL certificate is highly recommended to make sure your website is secure to browse and your visitor’s information is private and safe.

It prevents criminals or hackers from reading and modifying the information transferred between the web server and web browser.

When you visit a site and see there is a padlock icon next to the URL in the address bar, that means your website is protected.

Importance of SSL

We will try to elaborate on why SSL is important for an e-commerce site-

  • Encrypts Sensitive Information
  • Provides Safety and Authentication
  • Provides Trust and Value to Your Site
  • Required for PCI Compliance

Reasons Why You Need An SSL Certificate

This created a lot of panic for website owners because visitors are highly likely to leave your website out of fear.

Even worse, they won’t purchase if you have an eCommerce business.

To get rid of this situation, HostGator now offers free SSL certificates for all customers. They also help to install an SSL on your website.

1. SSL Encrypts Sensitive and Confidential Information

The primary reason why SSL is used is to keep sensitive and confidential information sent across the Internet encrypted so that only the intended recipient can access it.

This is important because the information you send on the Internet is passed from computer to computer to get to the destination server.

Any computer in between you and the server can see your credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, and other sensitive information if it is not encrypted with an SSL.

When an SSL is used, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information. This protects it from hackers and identity thieves.

2. Provides Safety and Authentication

A proper SSL also provides safety and authentication. This means you can be sure that you are sending information to the right server and not to an imposter trying to steal your information.

Why is this important? The nature of the Internet means that your customers will often be sending information through several computers.

Any of these computers could pretend to be your website and trick your users into sending them personal information.  It is only possible to avoid this by getting an SSL from a trusted SSL provider.

3. Provides Trust and Value to Your Site

Web browsers give visual cues, such as a lock icon or a green bar, to make sure visitors know when their connection is secured.

This means that they will trust your website more when they see these cues and will be more likely to buy from you.

SSL providers will also give you a trust seal that instils more trust in your customers. Once your customers start trusting you, they will also value your site.

4. Required for PCI Compliance

In order to accept credit card information on your website, you must pass certain audits that show that you are complying with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards. One of the requirements is properly using SSL.
