A table of content makes it easier for users to jump to the section they want to read. After starting a blog, it’s important to know the adding table of content in the blog post. In this post, I will show you how to create a table of content in WordPress posts and pages without any coding skills. You can also create a table of content manually by writing HTML code. But it is difficult for beginners. There are tons of plugin that will help you to have a wonderful table of contents.
What is the table of contents?
A table of content is the heading and abbreviation usually found on a page before starting the written work of this chapter or section title or a brief description with their commencing page number.
Why the table of content is important
An article with a table of content has more professional appearance than the article without table content. A table of content provides an outline and organize your thought so that you don’t miss anything to describe.
Sometimes readers don’t have so much time to read the whole article. At that time table of content provides the overview of the whole article and saves the time of the readers.
Readers need familiar points of reference for quickly locating important information, TOC can help readers on that regard by showing the abbreviated titles.
How to install the table of content
The first thing you need to do is to install and activate the Easy Table of Contents plugin.
To activate you need to visit Settings >>Table of Contents page. From the contents plugin, you can set your general setting for Table of Contents.
You can also enable or disable auto-insertion of the table of content for each post type. If enabled, then the plugin will automatically add a table of contents for an article that has more than 4 headings. You can change that to any other number that you like.
You should use table of contents you are about to write a long article.
Then you need to go to the Advanced settings section. The default options would work for most websites, but you can review these options to see if you would like to adjust anything.
Click Save Changes button to store these settings.
Adding Table of Contents to WordPress Posts or Pages
If you select the auto-insertion, the plugin will now automatically start adding a table of contents to posts based on settings you chose earlier. You can also manage the settings on a post by post basis.
On the post edit screen, you will notice a new section to add and manage the table of contents for your post.
